Mayan Underworld
What you will live
Hen people think of cenotes they picture an hour-long drive out of Playa. This tour leaves from Fifth Avenue on an electric bike and in 22 kilometres drops you inside the largest underground river system in the world.
The ride is half the experience. We cross the city on the bike lane past murals and skate parks, go through the ejido and Villa Maya, and your guide tells you how people actually live here. Then we head into the jungle on forest trails, with Mayan medicinal plants, the legend of Chechen and Chaka, and the local wildlife.
We reach a complex of semi-open caves and cenotes connected to the Sac Actun system. With underwater lamps we swim among stalactites and stalagmites thousands of years old, and you get a free hour to stay in the water, snorkel or just sit in silence. We finish with Mexican food at a local restaurant.
